Blossom Bike Tour

Peace and Justice G8 bike tour of Wales
March-July 2005

Welcome to the Blossom Bike Tour Home Page.

The Blossom Bike Tour is a bike tour across Wales to promote peace, justice and sustainable development as well as raising awareness about the up-and-coming G8 summit in Gleneagles this July.

The tour will be starting in Aberystwyth on the 27th March and should be finishing back in Aberystwyth on the 20th June. The bike which is going to have a trailer is going to be stopping off at 57 towns across Wales.

There is going to be a dynamo on the bike so that people can come and charge up their phones, play music all by cycling. By doing this, people will become more aware of their energy consumption as well as better understanding the alternatives.

I will be running workshops in the majority of towns that I stop in. The workshops will be interactive workshops about the G8. They will comprise of explaining to people what the G8 is about as well as finding out what people feel we should be doing about the G8. The workshop is adapted from the trapeze workshop.

The main aim of the tour is to create the Welsh Agenda for the G8 summit. I will be gathering peoples views as I cycle across Wales of what people feel the G8 should be discussing as well as what they should be doing. If you are unable to see me on my tour, please feel free to e.mail me any contributions to the Welsh agenda to <welshagenda@blossom.headweb.co.uk>

So you are wondering what this is all about. Ok, it all started when I decided that I wanted to go to the G8 Summit. Having attended the G8 summit in Evian, I did not want to go along to be a part of a critical mass but to actually achieve something. Although I feel demonstrating is important and a vital part of our current democratic society, I wanted to do something more.

Having been living in Wales for the past three years in beautifull Aberystwyth, I had become involved in local Welsh politics and Welsh activist groups. It seems that Wales is a place for positive change that can set an exemplary example to the rest of the World. With this in mind I decided that I wanted to create a Welsh agenda for the G8, in which people can contribute, saying what they feel the G8 should be doing for them. To this extent the Welsh people will be able to have a greater voice.

It is very important to realise that the issues of peace, justice, sustainable development and human rights can not be separated. You can not achieve one without achieving the others. This is why this tour is so vital as it will make people more aware that we can not separate the fact that we are experiencing climate change and that more and more deaths are occurring across the globe. We can not separate the fact that more and more cars are on the roads causing climate change and more wars for oil.

Why did I call the tour the Blossom Bike Tour; well, the roots for change have already been set in Wales. Just look at the number of peace and justice organisations that exist across Wales. Since the roots for change have already been sewn all they need to do now is blossom and this is why I called the tour: The Blossom Bike Tour.
