What is the Make Poverty History Campaign?

Make Poverty History is a coalition of NGO's who are fighting for:

The allience believes that 2005 offers an unprecedential opportunity for global change. It is the year to say 'enough is enough' and to step up the campaign to end global injustices, which have trapped billions of people across the world in the vicious circle of poverty.

There is going to be a Make Poverty History rally in Edinburgh on the 2nd July. There will be coaches going from across Wales. For more details please see Wales own Make Povery History website. Please note there is not going to be a Welsh train going up to the rally and therefore it is best if individuals and groups look at the offical Make Poverty History website transport section.

Drop The Debt

More and Better Aid

For more information on how developmental aid is being spent please see War on Want. Currently for every £1 developing countries receive in aid they pay back £13 in debt repayments.

Britain are promising more and better aid to Africa. For more information please see the Comission for Africa report. However it must be noted that lot's of this money will be given to financial institutions to distribute such as Price Waterhouse Coopers who do not necessarily have the interests of the people at heart.

Trade Justice:

This is a whole network of issues to do with trade which are making it so that rich countries stay rich and poor countries stay work. The movement's aims not only to bring about fair trade regulations but also to make sure workers get paid fair wages for their labour and to also make it so that workers can be a part of trade unions.

Trade Justice Movement

A coalition of NGOs fighting to make trade regulations fair. They want to make sure trade works for all countries.

Make Trade Fair

A website run by Oxfam which has various petitions running asking on governments to change their trade policies and corporations to start paying their workers fair prices. Currently they are running a campaign to stop rich countries dumping cotton on to the world markets.

No Sweat

No Sweat stands for workers' solidarity. They are fighting for: a living wage, safe working conditions and independent trade unions for workers across the world.

Campaigns on Trade Justice:

Aids/HIV

Aids currently claims six lives a minute. The majority of these are in the developng World especially Africa. This is causing huge problems as large chunks of the adult population are dying of to this horrible disease leaving behind thousands of ophans.
